The Ethical site is an excellent distillation of information - I love that I can assess whether I agree with the rating they give the company.

It could take me some time to work through what I buy!Arianehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17977679825245376111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29783395.post-29688138210778350362009-10-27T18:12:55.404+11:002009-10-27T18:12:55.404+11:00I've been boycotting Nestle forever... well si...I've been boycotting Nestle forever... well since 1997 when I learnt of their unethical behaviour. For other purchases I try to use:

http://www.greenamericatoday.org/programs/responsibleshopper/

or

http://www.ethical.org.au/

to decide what brands are more ethical than others. My kids make concoctions of at least 3 kinds of cereal-type products each morning. The trouble I have with most of the alternatives is that they are bit heavy and tend to give me heartburn (both porridge and muesli do that) for some reason. But you're right, in my supermarket the other-brands are not even on the same side of the aisle. Just about behind the sign marked "Beware of the leopard".Arianehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17977679825245376111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29783395.post-38976510079087470702009-10-26T15:54:20.602+11:002009-10-26T15:54:20.602+11:00Forget Uncle Toby's, forget Kellogs, and forge...Forget Uncle Toby's, forget Kellogs, and forget Sanitarium.

Lowan Whole Foods have a really good Wholegrain Rolled Oats, which comes in a 1 kg bag.

Naturally it is NOT at eye-level, usually about knee-high, in amongst the 'also-ran' cereals.

Gae, in Callala BayGae, in Callala Bayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06352971096786599941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29783395.post-13508826975736333002009-10-26T15:07:28.447+11:002009-10-26T15:07:28.447+11:00Hi, I just clicked through from http://hoydenabout...Hi, I just clicked through from http://hoydenabouttown.com/20091026.6893/femmostroppo-reader-october-26-2009/

Just on the item of instant coffee, since I'm a coffee nut:

Jasper Coffee do a fair trade Organic Instant (along with a zillion types of real coffee). :-)

https://www.jaspercoffee.com/category.do?idCateg=20thorfinn@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10760267959505440094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29783395.post-89262338682878704412009-10-16T22:30:03.770+11:002009-10-16T22:30:03.770+11:00Yes, indeed - the fact that I am attempting to boy...Yes, indeed - the fact that I am attempting to boycott Nestle while supporting the religious raving looneys that are Sanitarium has been a source of amusement round here.

I guess I am trying to prove to myself that I can manage something as a matter of principle. I lasted about a year, and that's just Sanitarium! Then there's Kellogs who coat Nutragrain in a glaze to give it its advertised minerals and vitamins.

I have sadly resigned myself to the idea that, were I to boycott every unethical company, I'd have to be totally self-sufficient.Dion Dettererhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07331222463635699668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29783395.post-86721076393360559722009-10-07T07:53:51.741+11:002009-10-07T07:53:51.741+11:00No, I didn't hear that Kraft want to buy Cadbu...No, I didn't hear that Kraft want to buy Cadbury. *shudder* It's particularly terrifying when so much of our food supply is owned by such a small group of companies.

The reason for my attempting to boycott Nestle (and I do mean attempting - that's a long list!) is a bit of a combination of the formula pushing, their utter disregard for sourcing ethical chocolate and their general contempt for public opinion. The most recent stunt with #nestlefamily has really shown just how little respect they have for the general public.

Also, I think it perhaps represents a tiny baby step for me to start thinking more broadly about how I spend my money. I tend to think about it carefully, but then when I decide I need something, I make an exception "just this time". If I can actually really not buy Nestle for a real length of time, it might prove to me that I am not dependent on things I have always bought.

Uncle Tobys is a big loss though!Arianehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17977679825245376111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29783395.post-41890534752316380702009-10-07T01:34:22.981+11:002009-10-07T01:34:22.981+11:00Okay.
